Arles: Caesar’s come back
During Roman time, Arles, called then Arelate, was an important centre for goods circulation through the Empire and its port …. a rubbish dump. This is the reason why, in the last 20 years sub-aquatic excavations, nearly 700 objects, dating from the 1st century BC to the 4th century, were found in the Rhone river around Arles and Saintes Maries de la Mer: coins, jewels, shoes, oil lamps, amphoras, …, and also statues . Thanks to mud, they were kept in an exceptional condition, as shown by the beautiful Julius Caesar’s marble bust. The poet Ausonius was right to call Arles “the little Gallic Rome”…
